About Us

In January 1987, in order to change the fate of the needy diabetics, and to help them live better with diabetes, a group of volunteers, under the patronage of the Lions Club of Port-au-Prince Central, opened 2 clinics: one at the Hospital Saint-François de Sales, and another one in Cite Soleil on the premises of the Centres pour le Developpement et la Sante (CDS). Health care was offered for free, and educational sessions before and after the medical examination were made to explain the importance of the treatment, the necessity to recognize early the signs and symptoms of diabetes and their complications, and the obligation to report them immediately to the medical team. At that time, three patients who came to the clinics were in bad shape, mostly in precoma, and they soon realized that their health status was getting better, and they encouraged the newcomers to follow the valuable advice of the medical team.

In May 1987, the Haitian Association for Diabetes (AHD) was created with the help of the Lions Club of Port-au-Prince Central. The clinics at that time were attended by more than 100 patients per week.

In 1989, AHD inaugurated its site in Lalue. The clinics of Saint-Francois and Cite Soleil were transferred to that site, and AHD was able to provide other services like daily educational sessions, sales of drugs to the members of the association at a cheaper price.

The frequency of Hypertension and other vascular diseases was high in this diabetic population, and because of that, AHD became in 1993 the FHADIMAC (Haitian Foundation for Diabetes and Cardiovascular Diseases).

Since then, members can come to the foundation to buy drugs cheaper, or to attend the daily educational sessions on diabetes and Hypertension. We also have a weekly clinic for the needy patients, and we give free insulin to the needy young diabetics through our sponsorship program.

With more than 3000 members, Fhadimac is a totally private Haitian foundation. Fhadimac plays an essential role in the daily life of thousands of diabetic and hypertensive patients and their families, giving them valuable advice to "Live better with Diabetes and Hypertension".
